Valley City Community Mural
It all started with one question: “What color do you think of when you think of Valley City?” This sparked a conversation about how to reflect our community’s spirit through vibrant public spaces. In 2023, the Main Street Initiative (MSI) Vibrancy Grant provided the perfect opportunity to make this vision a reality, supporting small, community-driven projects that inspire change.

In August 2024, a group of local artists designed a mural celebrating Valley City’s culture: a cowboy hat for the North Dakota Winter Show, wheat for the agricultural heart of the area, and pizza for the iconic Pizza Corner, among others. During the Summer Vikes on Central event – a collaborative community-focused event between Summer Nights on Central and Valley City State University – nearly 1000 residents, students, alumni, and visitors stopped downtown Valley City to enjoy entertainment, connect with one another, and bring the mural to life, with the help of Valley City High School art students and community volunteers.

Now completed, the mural is a vibrant addition to downtown, showcasing symbols that reflect Valley City’s history and spirit. But the project didn’t just bring color to a blank wall—it brought people downtown, sparked conversations, and reignited excitement about the future of our city. The project has also inspired conversations about what more can be done to enhance public spaces, with new ideas emerging for future community-led projects that could build on this success.
